You will want to use as much Attack rating as possible early on. Anything that gives more attack rating than your previous piece will be your top priority. For glyphs you want about as much hit rating as you get pen rating.

A basic beginner build that primarily uses Blade.

This is a simple build that can be used as a guideline to understanding the basic structure of a survival build.

I tried to limit the amount of AP spend, but did not cut back on the more important passives. You can use any other similar passive/active until you unlock the more expensive abilities.

As you obtain more AP consider changing Balancing blade for Clearing the path and Fire at Will for Three round burst.

Clearing the path is a strong AoE consumer with increased penetrating hit chance, while Three round burst will deal more Single target damage as single mobs are generally tougher to deal with than group mobs and Blade Torrent & Clearing the Path have that area covered already.

Melee weapons Build resources when you’re not engaged in combat.
This allows you to open the fight with your melee consumer(s).

Blade Torrent creates 1 resource for both of your weapons allowing you to enable the use of your Blade and assault rifle consumers which both will deal more damage for every resource up to 5.

Lock & Load can be used to deal additional damage when it’s active.

You use this ability by targeting an enemy and then activating Lock and load, this will build 3 resources on your target enabling the use of “Assault rifle consumer”.

Penetrating hits

Dark Potency & Iron Maiden add to your penetrating hit chance. Penetrating hit chance is the bane of your enemy block chance reducing their block rate while increasing your chance to deal additional damage.

Both passives require an affliction active on the enemy to become active, Perfect Storm takes up this role allowing you to benefit from this strong synergy.

This passive increases the damage taken by your enemy by 3% per stack up to 10 stacks (30%). Every Blade/Chaos/Hammer attack applies one stack on each target hit.

Turn the tables is a quick heal that requires no healing stats to work, an excellent panick button.

Martial Discipline & Regeneration provide you with both mitigation and healing. Even without heal rating regeneration provides you with a decent amount of healing while enemy attacks under the effect of Martial Discipline glance and deal less damage than normal. Best used around 30-50% of your health.

Stunning Swirl can stun your enemies for 3 seconds, this will interrupt any enemy casted ability as well as dealing a moderate amount of damage to any enemy hit by the ability.

Using Balancing blade against Impaired enemies will grand you 2 additional Blade resources afterwards.

Brilliant and very effective build! I broke through Transylvania with it. The only discipline I’ve finally changed was The Art of War instead of Stunning Swirl. Only just because TAOW looks much cooler and have also mitigation effect.

    • Ciritty

3 seconds impair is much more damage mitigating than 1 second impair and 2 glances per target. ;)

  • Jon

Incredibly good and easy starter build! Thank you! I stumbled around with 4 starter characters trying to find a good starting point.

  • The Guilty Party

If you’re running Blade anyway, wouldn’t Point of Harmony be a better self-heal? You get 30% of your health back, which even on someone with only 2000 hp is still better than the 650hp of Turn the Tables. Definintely not as quick though (3 second channel).

    • Ciritty

Well first of all 2000*0.3 = 600 so that’s less healing than turn the tables :p Secondly spending 3 seconds channeling an ability that doesn’t even let you move while activated – isn’t going to make your enemies wait until you’re done healing, they will continue to attack you and you’ll only lose health not gain any. :)

      • The Guilty Party

Yeah, you have good points. I think I’ve just been allergic to running around with fewer than 5k hp since about Blue Mountain, so the Turn the Tables always seemed like a drop in a bucket that could be usefully replaced with an impair or defensive cooldown or something.

I LOVE this build. Helps me out more than I can say.

    • Ciritty

      Good to hear! :)

  • Chris Ferrar

Why is this build considered outdated? Was that comment just added? I didnt notice it over the past week or so while spending my points to make this build, which by the way seems to be working quite well! I like it so far.

    • Ciritty

It still works but with the changes made to AoE I have to revise how much AoE is optimal to take. I plan on making beginner builds with each weapon combination though.

      • Chris Ferrar

I think its the PBoE that rocks on this build, I do pretty well against single mobs with it, but really shine against crowds, I love attacking groups with this and watching them all go through their death animation at the same time, in sync, its funny & gratifying!

    • Chris Ferrar

So far I am up the BF in trans, and this build is still going pretty strong for me. I’ve geared up as primarily a tank but with 3 DPS talismans. Still effective.

  • HN NH

TYVM for this build! Have been dying to try different combinations but always takes me forever to come up with something effective. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

  • Chivalry

Is this still a viable build? I’m in the first main area. . New to the game. . And was using the sword and pistol starter deck the game has preset… After saving a load of points and switching to this build I seem to be struggling to kill stuff as easy. . And seem alot more squishy.. :-(
What am I doing wrong. ..
I even managed tohave a lvl 5 blue sword I got and lvl 3 blue assault rifle. ..

    Sigh…… Help. . :-)

    • Ciritty

Yes it still works, but it’s important to obtain the upgrades as you get further into the game as AoE alone won’t get you through the zones beyond Kingsmouth.

  • Girish Sharma

Hey guys need small help..i am not able to find Passive Breakdown , Iron Maiden and Dark Potency…where can find this Passive Please help…

    • Ciritty

Sorry for the late reply, you can use passives from all weapons. Breakdown is a chaos passive, Dark potency and iron maiden are from blood.

  • Very nice build. I have just got back into the game after about 2 years and am having a ton of fun with it. Nice mix of pulling abilities and close up defence and I am only about 50% into the build atm. Good Stuff :P

  • Jonathan Samuels

Main issue with this at the moment is it works too well, havent found any need to use anything else so far in the Egyptian sun god zone
