Suggested Auxiliary Abilities
Ability Ability Crack grants you another huge damage amplifier by reducing your enemies resistances by 200 (estimates at about 8% damage increase) and up 1.5/3/4.5% damage on top of that for 3 seconds if you use a Binding signet in your whip.
Ability Ability Sometimes you need even more impairs. Try to convince your team mates to take Crack instead.
Gear Stats
1800+Attack Rating
650Hit Rating
750Block Rating
For most bosses, you should be able to go lower on Health so you can get more Attack Rating. More damage will help you generate more hate too.

I tried coming up with a better name, but what’s better than pink? This is the most basic and balanced tanking build i came up with when i was in 10.0.4 tanking gear and it works great all the way from 10.0 to 10.5.5 For more tanking info be sure to check out Pink Tanking Guide.

Dancing Blade & Elemental Force

Once fully geared and experienced enough to handle a focused consumer without messing up your impairs Dancing Blade (Replace for clearing the path) combined with Elemental force (Replace for Voracity) will help you increase your damage output.

Master’s House

Trading impair for more Damage when not required.

If in need of more hate this active provides you with increased hate generation on demand.

If you’re having trouble surviving somehow, another defensive cooldown may aid you.

Paradigm Shift

Hit fix for starting tanks/ Higher hit requirement dungeons (Hell Eternal, Hell raised, Slaughterhouse). In lower gear levels you will want to replace 12 gauge with this, once geared replace voracity instead.

It’s a fairly straight forward setup that by default provides an adequate amount of mitigation and dps (hate) while being extremely versatile in allowing you to add more of either by merely switching some actives/passives.

When you’re making use of 12 Gauge, using Clearing the path with less than 5 resources can be a clever tactic, but only to get more debilitated stacks faster your hate and damage output will be affected negatively so make sure to do so sparingly, use a normal rotation otherwise.

Discord rising applies 4 stacks (3 without Breakdown) of exposed and can hit the same target multiple times allowing you to stack exposed faster, while not a great addition over long fights it’s certainly a nice button to have.

Martial Discipline is my favored damage reduction cooldown for one of the primary reasons I advocate block rating, the high chance to reduce damage makes for a reliable damage reduction when in peril.

The low cooldown and range of chaotic pull makes this ability the number one impair that should always be included in a tank build that uses a chaos focus! Both Chaotic pull and Dominos effect can be used to interrupt abilities.

Hey really like the Passive selections here.

But if you wanted to utilize Elemental Force and Needed Paradigm Shift for hit rating…what would you drop for those 2?

    • Ciritty

Lacking a bit of context, would you still be gearing up as such lack the glyph points for hit or would it be dungeon related such as hell raised while fully glyphed?

If still gearing up Elemental Force is probably not a good idea, but could be replaced for 12 gauge (since you don’t have pen either.. EF would not be your best choice though)

If dungeon specific while fully glyphed you would want to remove CcC, do not need the mitigation provided by CcC and you want to keep iron maiden.

  • Josh

Love this tank build. It’s the only one I ever use for dungeons. I just swap out a few passives or actives here and there as the situation calls for it. Anyways, is there any chance you could post up a good heal tank build? I’ve really been wanting to experiment with this, but I only really trust your builds. :P

    • Ciritty

Haha you’re making me blush :p I’ll setup a heal tank guide sometime until then..

      • Josh

Quick question. Would there be any benefit to swapping out “Iron Maiden” for “Body Piercing”?

        • Ciritty

No, 150 rating isn’t even close to 4% pen rate :p

          • Josh

Ah, ok. Lol. One more question if you don’t mind. Once I get Ashes of Elder Things (assuming it ever freaking drops for me -_-) Then would you recommend I keep Iron Maiden, or swap it out for something else?

          • Ciritty

Never ever drop Iron maiden :p It’s 10% to everything. Every other passive is less!

  • Dawnyaaa

Thanks for the build! One question though, which stats would you focus on? Pen, hit, block, def etc? (i understand by the look of it, a good pen is needed).

    • Ciritty

You start with Block, as you will want to survive and you have paradigm shift for hit rating and iron maiden and clearing the path for penetrating hits… then you upgrade hit to remove evades and eventually you upgrade pen rating!

If you meant the end stats those are listed above the abilities.

      • Dawnyaaa

No, i meant the path to take (i just restart the game ^^). which stats to increase first etc for being viable! Thank you for the answer! you were right on mark!

        • Ciritty

You’re welcome, good luck with tanking :D

  • Josh

Since they decided to nerf “Shoot ’em up”, wouldn’t “Perfect Storm” be better to use now?

    • Ciritty

yes, didn’t get to changing stuff yet :p

  • Nate Daves

I recently just started playing again. I was told to follow this guide for tanking. So far so good, but I was now wondering what changes, if any, can be made with the new 1.11 update?

    • Ciritty

This setup should not require any changes at all ^_^ if you’re having aggro issues try using stoicism, should you require an impair replace Discord rising for Trial by sword.

  • Albahtar

Any thoughts about swapping Domino Effect by Art of War?
Agreed it has a 50% longer CD, and can target only up to 5 hostiles, but the temporary forced aggro and the glance debuff are real nice…

    • Ciritty

Art of War can hit 6 targets – but no, Longer cooldown is counter productive and you use impair to stop casts, the build has sufficient mitigation without. You can use Art of War if you want but the only place where it would arguably be better to use would be Ankh 3!

No reason in using Karma, you’d lose the damage of a single target consumer and minor ward for a 7.5% pen rate on a AoE consumer. Most bosses are singular targets!

      • Albahtar

        6 targets indeed ^^
I hear you re. AoW and switched to Domino already, but as a beginner tank the force aggro really saved some messy runs. Not arguing about the principles, but I found it quite polyvalent in DW for instance… where impairs are kinda optional.

So, voracity is in there to really boost pens from builder + clearing the path then? What about the Minor Pen Chance effect (overpenetration)? Could it be better than voracity in practice?

        • Ciritty

Clearing the path isn’t a frenzy ability either so just builder! :p But without penetrating you can’t use minor pen chance passives as they require penetrating hits to activate!

  • LaLoLa

Wouldnt Escalation with Intensity be a much better builder?

    • Vikestart

Not really, considering that Intensity makes only Escalation apply the Exposed effect, while Breakdown will allow all chaos, blade and hammer attacks to apply Exposed, including Clearing the Path and Consequence. It’s very beneficial for the entire group if Exposed is stacked to max faster.

However, if your hit rating is significantly lower than 650 and/or you’re struggling with keeping aggro, Escalation + Intensity might be a better option, but not otherwise.

      • LaLoLa

Aaah ok thank you, what does make balde torrent on itself better than Escalation?

Also Shoot em up vs perfect storm?

        Thanks for the fast answer!

        • Vikestart

Nothing. You can use Escalation + Breakdown if you want. Perfect Storm is slightly better than Shoot ‘Em Up though, as the afflict lasts 8 seconds instead of 5 seconds, ensuring higher afflict uptime.

I would use Blade Torrent though, so you can put the Signet of Breaching on your blade, thus proccing it with both Blade Torrent and Clearing the Path. Especially Clearing the Path, as it has a +40% penetration chance. Then you can put a different signet, like signet of aggression on your chaos focus.

  • Chester Rico

Why shoot ’em up and not perfect storm? Shoot ’em up would make sense if you were using escalation, but the build has blade torrent.

  • Pedro Rocha

I jumped straight into this build as a noob.. and DAMN I tank like a boss. Thanks for this!

  • Iancovici Dragan

Idk if anyone else is alive here , but i just started playing this game and the skill tree is confusing and idk how to reach those skills ur showing us there , can u help a tsw noob please ?

    • Lunar Whaler

This is very much an end-game build, and not one you should be working on right now as a beginner! Take a look over here for some more beginner-friendly options:

That being said, here’s how to search up each ability: if you push N in-game, you’ll call up your Skill Wheel. On the right of the screen, there’s a panel you can expand to search up each ability by name. Clicking on the ability there will show it to you in the main panel and let you buy your way up to it.

If you don’t understand how the ability wheel works AT ALL, I suggest checking out a quick YouTube video explaining it.
